Penny Black
Playwright, Translator, Dramaturg
What I do
I have worked with language and with text my entire career and continue to do so with joy.
As a playwright I write one-person shows that have toured the world as well as large scale plays adapted from novels and non-fiction. As a translator from German I have translated over forty plays for theatres from the National Theatre to The Gate and Arcola; more recently I have turned to translating film and TV. As a dramaturg I have worked on subjects from the Middle East to IVF, with theatres from the Barbican to the Roundhouse.
I continue to believe that theatre can can tell stories that are hidden to the outside world in a way no other medium can.
I am of the opinion that theatre is a collective art form, not just one person's vision.
